I wasn't expected such pace from Gryazin, and doesn't look like Kalle was off pace. Last year Talsi was ~13km shorter, Kalle was 2nd, and difference from 3rd was ~20sec, this year Kalle also 2nd, difference from 3rd ~1min40sec. So Kalle and Gryazin far far ahead. They drive 3 rallies this year and all times Kalle was faster a lot. Aluksne 1:38:1; Sarma 38:4; Vaakuna 48.7. It seems N. Gryazin improving quite fast.

Yes, that glitch cost him the victory.
But N. Gryazin was awarded with 10 seconds penalty for incorrect passing of chicane in ss4 (don't know, if he had some significant gain from it) and it was announced only before SS9. So, there could be some speculations about, how it might have come out, if he knew that right away.
Nontheless, in SS9/10 (same stage, driven twice), there was immense battle between them. We stood on the insade of veeeery fast Right 2 (with some few hundred meters of strights before/after), Gryazin came flat out both times, not lifting at all. Kalle backed off, just a little, but still. Fearsome moment when you are on the trackside.
On city SS, Kalle looked more smooth, but Gryazin was faster on strights. In the end it came down to driver error.
But through the rally, Gryazin constantly posted faster times than Kalle, so there is something to it.
At least, I know, I must attend their next head to head race.

Actually, these stages are the smoothest gravel stages in Hungary. The pictures were taken on one stage, a former military training ground next to Szombathely, which has about 3 big jumps. The roads there see little traffic during the year, that's why it's so grassy and seems unused. The other stages in the forests are wide and very smooth, as they're used by big forestry trucks. Some drivers like the stages as they're not killing the cars like the stages around Veszprém, but some hate their characteristics (long straight->sharp corner->long straight->sharp corner->...).
