There were 3 announcements today: Biffle stays put +3 years, Bowyer stays put +3 years, Mears out end of year.
Tony's interview on his plans said "After today's announcements, my announcement of plans are moved back" Soooo, either Biffle or Bowyer were at the top of his list or he thinks Mears is better than his crrent top pick and worth talking to. (It's also possible that he knows more than what's been announced and he just lost his preffered driver to #5 seat.)

If you want wild ideas, how about this:
Tony Stewart goes to #5 for a year or two, creating a super team of all time. (The 4 drivers have what? about 70% of the T-shirt, hat, diecast market)
DE Jr brings his JR Motorsports up to Cup with Jimmie Johnson as partner, puts Truex & Brad Keselowski in cars.
TS buys 1/2 of Haas CNC, puts Mears and Martins (Mark & Matt) in cars.
JR & Stewart teams start as satellite teams to HMS, evolving into joint development partners like RCR/DEI or Roush/Yates.

Biffle is no surprise, he's stated several times that he wants to stay with Roush. I think Montoya would be a good fit at Hendrick if he wises up and leaves Ganassi. Otherwise McMurry is the only real choice (which unfortuently has more to do with convenience than talent).

Rick Hendrick needs to offer Smoke a partnership in the 5 car
Tony Stewart could get the 5 car running up front where it should be

Mears did a great job of that yesterday, being in the lead and running up front and finishing ahead of all his teammates.

Maybe Casey Mears can be a team-mate to Dario Franchitti in the Nationwide Series next year ...
