For the RRC versions it was also needed, so it was not a meaningless request and u never know what he'll do in the future. Looks to be almost sure now that he'll do ERC

Matton does strike me as being far too conservative in his driver choices. I get the impression that he doesn't like to gamble on unproven drivers, and would rather let them get their feet wet in a Ford or a Mini before poaching them away.
