If the car could not compete could it have been used as a course car? If it had been a '0' car it would have had to pass safety checks before the start & may have been issued with a scrutineering sticker, but I'm not sure whether use of a car inelligible for competition would have been permitted as a course car.

    Good morning Steve,

There are some very valid points you have raised there!...

I am unsure of the legalities of using a banned Group A car as course car, or your point of whether it would actually need scrutineering at all. I suppose the more you think about the latter, then the more it would make sense to scrutineer the car in question.

What I cannot understand though is that nobody - not only on this forum, but also assorted dedicated Belgian and French rally forums! - hasn't got a 1988 entry list or any photos of the car?

There are plenty of photos of Snijers winning M3 from that year - although I appreciate that a privateer in a aged Rover is somewhat different to a Belgian hero in a state-of-the-art Group A car! It just seems strange that all I can find is the above sticker on the actual car and nothing else.

Has anybody even got any 1988 Belgian rally books with the entry list or event report inside?

    Many thanks for your input,

    David

Here is a history-related question which, for some reason, has come to mind in recent days. In which group, A or B, did the Audi 80 Quattros entered by the works for Stig Blomqvist in Sweden and by Audi Sport UK for various drivers (mainly Harald Demuth, but also Darryl Weidner and Andrew Cowan) on the 1983 British Open Championship run?

I ask because I had always thought these were Group A cars; indeed, for instance, the narration on the ITV report of the 1983 Ulster Rally stated: 'Running against him [Per Eklund] in Group A is Harald Demuth's four-wheel-drive Audi 80 Quattro'. However, other video reviews of the 1983 British rounds do not talk of the 80 Quattro as being in Group A against Eklund's Corolla, Chris Lord's Mazda, the Escort RS1600is and so on (for example, here — http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqeEdBwol7w — where it is stated that Louise Aitken and Lord were contending the Group A lead at a point before Demuth retired). Also, both here — http://www.juwra.com/sweden_1983_entries.html — and here — http://www.rallybase.nl/index.php?ty...lt&rallyid=253 — Blomqvist's Sweden entry is given as being part of Group B. Yet a privateer Group A 80 Quattro is listed amongst the finishers on the 1983 1000 Lakes, and subsequent examples of the type, such as Mikael Ericsson's, were always Group A cars. I'd be most interested to read an explanation! Are those sources that have the 1983 works cars as being Group B just mistaken, or is there another reason?

According to M. Holmes' "Wold of Rallying 6" (report of Swedish Rally 1983): "The rally was so clearly expected to ba an Audi benefit the only point of interest at the top of the field was which of their drivers would win, or more pertinently, how much of a handicap Blomqvist would find the 80 Quattro to be. The 80 Quattro was inportant because of what would happen later in the year when the model would be homologated in group A. It would be promoted by the factory as the recommended car for national teams and privateers to run". Sweidish Rally 1983 was the first major rally for Audi 80 Quattro. It was run in group B. Later that year July 1st 1983 Audi 80 Quattro was homologated as a group A car under homologation number A5156.
