Report on Champcar Auction
A decent crowd showed up with money to burn (IMO). Bid Prices on most things were much higher than I expected. From tools to artwork, it all sold at a high price.
The safety trucks went for an average of $13K each while pace cars ranged from $48 to 12K. The DP01's stripped of engine, gear box, all high pressure hoses and electronics went for an average of $25 K while the 2000 Reynard went for 30K and the 2001 Lola went for only 18K (you had to get it down from the ceiling mount after you bought it.)
Artwork and posters sold from $25 to 1000 dollars each.
All four major TV stations were present and interviewed buyers.
I only saw one transport trailer auction live and it went for $77.5K.
There was a lot of internet buying going on, paying a 15% premium while the on site buyers paid a 10% premium.
I had to leave prior to end so I don't have a feel for total dollars raised.
I saw owners from the transition teams as well as established IRL teams. Top officials from the IRL and ALMS were there. Lots of Indy racing connected faces in the crowd. A couple of small regional track owners and teams from other series also there looking for bargins.
It was a good day overall.

Machines and memories on the block at Champ Car auction
Posted: June 3, 2008 04:11 PM EDT
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - What was left of Champ Car has been sold to the highest bidder. Machines and memories were on the auction block at a west side Indianapolis warehouse.
Nine hundred items were up for bid.
Bidder Tom Drawbaugh was looking for machine tools.
"I found some but I don't think I'll find any bargains...Well, I think they've got a good crowd here and they look like they have plenty of money," said Drawbaugh.
Champ Car chassis were also up for bid.
"Just a toy. There's no series racing them anymore. You buy one...it's a hobby," said bidder Rick Coy.
Peter Larsson, whose company puts cameras inside race cars, hoped to get a transporter truck on the cheap.
"And we need a trailer to drag our fiber optic cable around," said Larsson.
The one Larsson liked went for $70,000. The Champ Car chassis went for $24,000 to $42,000. A Dodge Viper was sold for $37,000.
Former Champ Car employees now out of the job also made use of the auction.
"The merger sort of put me out of work. So I figured, what a great place to come and see if someone wanted to bid on an experienced race car person," said former employee Amanda Trotter.

Hopefully Indycar will embrace the greatness it once had, and live up to its legacy.....

I forgot to add that Jim Swintel's art sold quite well. I was running back and forth between the 2 auction rings but saw his work going for a minimum of $125. "Good on ya Jimmy"
