Bobardier Learjet 550 is 342 Miles?
According to the indycar.com event info page, the race is 228 laps/342 miles long- http://www.indycar.com/schedule/?event_id=19
Given that, where does the 550 in the name come from?

IMO, It is called spin marketing. Everything is bigger in Texas so they have to have a race bigger than the number 500.

In my opinion we need more 500 milers than Indy say at perhaps Fontana or Michigan. I know this idea is not new, but to me 500 miles is a true test of endurance and teamwork. 600 miles is waaaaaaay too much and at the speeds these cars run, a lot of times you're done with an oval race in 2 hours, hardly worth a long drive and the price of admission to a regional track.

I'm not sure which conversion constant you are using, but it is indisputable that 1km=1000m=3280.84ft=0.6214mi. Ergo, 550km=341.754mi

according to igoogle's unit converter (and to be precise to 9 decimal places...)
550k is 341.753500000 miles
For me it sound reasonable to remove Hybrid from the car in terms of cost saving. If I am not mistaken, one unit is ca 15% of the total car cost. And in most of the rallies, more than one unit is...
