See the in car shot , he starts in second gear ????

Yes, as you can see the in-car shot is with gravel setup. Probably better to start in 2nd gear as there's not enough traction to put it all on the asphalt in first gear.

Clearly working out the strategy for the Spanish Day 1 mixed surfaces. There is a significant amount of asphalt in between the gravel sections

As "reward" for his efforts, Citroen is going to make Loeb work until the end of the season doing some... test on gravel!
He doesn't understand it. IMO in the future he'll need to switch off his mobile permanently. If doesn't, this won't be his last test on gravel...
