@Eddie Why? He can do nice rally which he likes and had good results in the past, get paid and drive, instead of being at the gym in Monaco.
More proof it's possible to run successful events outside the WRC/ ERC.....providing events are well organised and run well.
DISA the Canary Islands fuel company paid Auriol and Kankkunen to drive in Citroen Xsaras and C4s a few years back on a couple of El Corte Ingles outings and tobacco money always used to attract drivers to one off rides pretty much anywhere so this is just a further example of that. When the Lanzarote organisers were trying to get their gravel event back into the SCER last year after the earlier debacle they paid for Henning Solberg and Bernado Sousa to do the rally in Sports&You C3 Rally2s so good on the Azores team for trying to keep their rally on the radar.
In the 90s, Azorean tobacco companies supported the foreign pilots who were present.
Same here in Belgium, mostly happened with Ypres Rally and Condroz Rally.
