My five list of biggest failed attempts to run a 2-cycle engine in a major racing series:
5=AAA Championship(IRL)=1934=Cummins Diesel=Supercharged I-6 Cummins=6.0 Liter=At first this car, driven by Hartwell "Stubby" Stubblefield, doesn't look like a failure because it raced all 500 miles at Indy, finishing in 12th place and ahead of the Cummins 4-cycle car, however as soon as the race ended, the engine seized up and the company never ran a 2-cycle car in the race again.
4=AAA Championship(IRL)=1931=Duray Special=Supercharged V-16 Duray=4.0 Liter=Driven by Leon Duray in the Indy 500, this car, although fairly fast, suffered from overheating problems so bad that it could barely complete its qualifying run. In the race, it dropped out on the sixth lap with overheating.
3=European Championship(F1)=1935=Monaco Trossi=Supercharged Double Row (8x2) Radial-16 Fiat=4.0 Liter=The car practiced for the Italian Grand Prix driven by Carlo Felice Trossi but did not make a qualifying attempt due to poor handling unrelated to the engine's performance.
2=Can Am=1970=Mac's IT Special=Four I-2 Rotax (One .8 Liter at each wheel and 8 total cylinders)=3.2 Liter=This car practiced for the Laguna Seca race driven by Hiroshi Fushida but did not attempt to qualify because of slow speeds.
1=F1=1951=Guidobaldi=Supercharged Radial-8 Guidobaldi=1.5 Liter=The car was tested by M. F. Guidobaldi but performed poorly due its unique suspension and did not enter a Grand Prix that year. The following year, the World Championship was run under F2 rules and thus the car's engine was then too big to compete.
