    Default Questions about rally?

    Where is the best place to buy second hand cars for rally? (perferably a peugeot of some sort)

    What do I need to do to a car to make it suitable for rally?

    What can I do to improve the performance of the car for rally?

    What equipment is in the average WRC rally car?

    2) if you buy the right car for rally, put some fuel in it and then give it the full wellie. And then pitch it sideways into the corners.

    3) do everything in the great books "Ford Escort Rally Preparation" and "How to Prepare the Sierra for Motorsport" including stich welding the entire shell, welding in an approved integrated cage, fitting GOOD rally suspension, get short final drive and a multi-plate LSD, add some GOOD brakes and pads and you will have increased performance---
    IF YOU MASH THE PEDAL..

    Many many people, especially where I am across the Ocean from you, spend insane amounts of money, skip vital things like shell strengthening, and then forget to open the throttle...
    So, remember FULL WELLIE.

    (Oi! you didn't give us near enough information to say anything more than the most superficial stuff. ALL those answers are seriously the best we can do with no information on who you are, age, budget for the project, interests

    (to me there's only gravel rally but I think I read somewhere that some people, believe it or not actually enjoy driving on TARMAC! Yeah! or at least the bastids CLAIM they like driving on tarmac....Can you imagine that?? Fawk me sounds horrible, but some people put on rubber suits and spank each other, too. Come to think of it, those people in rubber suits who spank each other probably ARE tarmac rally pervs!)


    Now just reviewing this I think I noticed something about about desiring some French FRONT wheel drive thing...

    There must be some reason for that..

    Sorry about that I wasn't thinking straight.
    Im 16 years old and live between Daventry and Banbury in northamptonshire, England. I dont have much money but I should be getting a part time job, yes I know I dont have alot of cash but I want to save up enough money which will be a long time as motorsport is exspensive.
    I thought a peugeot would be a good start for me as it would be a cheap option for a car.
    I dont have much exprience in motorsport or cars even though you can probaly tell this from my questions.
    I should be starting college for a motorsport engineering course in september and my part time job would be helping out my dad with his agricultral engineering work.
    What car do you think is suitable for a beginner?
    Where can I buy the safety equipment like fire exstinguisher, helmet, overalls, etc.

    I only know a little bit about preparing a car for rally and what I know is get rid of all the unncessary componets and features from the car, weld the roll change into the car piece by piece and strengthen th shell.

    Well you're certainly in the right place for doing in life what you are planning....

    Look I have to go make chips, ( I manufacture rally suspension and steel flywheels and build rally motors, so no rest on Saturday for me--or time to drive) But take note: don't worry about anything that expires until the car runs...Romper suits, seats, brain buckets, harness all have expiration dates, you buy those so the arrive a few days before the first event to get the most life out of them...

    Seriously this forum isn't the place for detailed discussion. We have a nice forum (founded out in my shop one evening after a day of work on 3-5 guys rally cars here) with TONS and TONS of building cars threads and lots of guys starting out. 99% are good guys, and friendly and helpful. LOTS of RWD cars, some FWD and even some with turbo 4wd, but above all a forum aimed at the Clubbie guy who has limited budget..

This will almost certainly be a quicker and cheaper way to start competing and will allow you to examine in detail what needs to be done. After doing a few events you will be in a much better position to decide whether to improve the car you have or to build a car from scratch.     Just tried looking in at that forum. EVERYTHING LOCKED...can't even look without registering

    That's always the first sign of a poor leadership team or a single minded idiot in charge of a web forum.

    Tried registering.

    Fill out a bunch of stuff and hit "agree' and get a brilliant message "the user name you chose is too short"
    "the password you chose is too short" ,
    "the email address you chose is too short....."
    and on and on.

    Mark this is a good place for chatting about things with a great array of voices from all over the world and its generally very good in the rally forums... but its not a place for detailed "this is how you assemble a strut" or this is what makes a good welder to buy".

    I have sung the praises of the rally sections here for the people I'm in contact with for good insight, and good humored discussions---98% of the time..

    We'll leave the discussions of the extremely biased Moderators on the Chit-Chat to off topic---(hint Mark, Americans should not moderate anywhere where their opinions might be a minority opinion, they can't handle it)

    The forums world is not a zero-sum scenario...a guy CAN look in here AND look in elsewhere for specifics.

    Pistonheads classified section is the best place to look for entry level cars, alternatively racecarsdirect.com (although that tends to have some really out of date adverts so you need to check when the things were first listed).

    Unless you are an experienced mechanic then it's probably best to avoid building your own car, it's actually quite involved. In terms of what safety equipment is required you'd have to read the MSA Blue Book to find out (WARNING: the Blue Book may leave you more confused). There is more to it than just ripping out the interior, plumbing in an extinguisher and fitting a cage.

    A small Peugeot (106 or 205) would be an ideal starter car, but equally you could probably learn in a Yaris, Citroen C2 etc. etc. Someone like rallyschool.co.uk (think that's it) is another option, I believe that they rent/hire out cars...although that's unlikely to be a cost effective option.

    For equipment then GP Racewear/Demon Tweeks are the two main ones, although eBay is a good option for boots and race suits as they have a longer time before you need to renew. For a helmet I'd advise buying new, as the guy said when I bought mine "you only get one head"...also you don't know what possible damage has been sustained by a second hand one.

    As for a WRC car, well we're talking a whole different world. I've not watched it but here's a video about building an Impreza How to build a WRC Car - YouTube

    All of the components will be bespoke and cost a fortune, I believe that the going rate for an ex-works car is about 300,000...but I could be way off on that, I tried having a quick look about but couldn't find anything concrete.
