Brazilian Guilherme Spinelli will contest the next Dakar Rally in a Mitsubishi ASX.
It is an all-new prototype, based on the old Mitsubishi Racing Lancer. According to what is being said here, it was fully developed here in Brazil by Thierry Viardot (the same that was responsible for the project of the Racing Lancers and is now hired by Mitsubishi Brasil). The parts were produced here in Brazil and went to Europe to complete the montage of the car.
What I heard is that is a better car than the Racing Lancer, new engine, lighter, new weight distribution, and shorter. On the dunes, it's better, and has a better handling too.
Its debut was on the last Rallye Maroc. Spinelli won the first day and finished the event on third overall.
There won't be any other event for the car prior to the Dakar, only a few tests.

Spinelli - Mitsubishi ASX
This is interesting, am new to this site and happy to see some analysis of the Dakar that is not available anywhere else. I agree with most of the below mentioned
but wonder how the Mitsubishi could be lighter as minimum weight is dependent on cubic capacity of the engine. If it is the same as the Racing Lancer (4 liter), then the weight would be the same (Around 1850 Kg). Also, it most probably is not a V8 with higher CC as mentioned elsewhere on this forum as then the minimum weight would be an increased one.

Oh I see. Wonder whether Mitsubishi has a diesel option too? Miguel Barbosa has been pretty successful in Portugal with a Racing Lancer running a diesel engine. Maybe that option is not ready for the Dakar yet?

They used works diesel Lancers in their last Dakar outing if I remember right. It was quite a disaster.

Yep, and after Mitsu stopped worksd involvement, most teams using Racing Lancers turned to gasoline.
3.5 V6, 4.0 V6 and even 2.0 turbo from the Lancer Evo.
Up to this year, main reason is that only a factory can have enough resources to develop diesel proto engines.
Now with new rules, Diesels are not that favoured, (I am not saying that are penalized, but in the past favoured) and gasoline bigger engines seems to be just simpler and more widely available.
In Morocco Spinelli was running a V8, in any video the noise is claerly a V8 for me.
Wevers and Van Loon Lancers (now called HRX) are running Ford Mstang V8 (5 liter).Zeque

Spinelli V8?
Mitsubishi does not have a V8. At least that's what Wevers said when questioned on their web site as to why a Ford engine was used. Spinelli being from a Mitsubishi team might be still using an advanced spec of the V6. Yes, the sound was different when racing for the first and only time in Morocco.
